Happy New Week Parents and Students!
The DAJA Christmas program is quickly approaching and students are practicing for the program. Please note that the day of the Program is December 16, 2015 which is a Wednesday. If any parents are willing to help with props, costuming or in some other way, please contact Miss Felicia Barnard (1st and 2nd grade teacher), the program director.
This week we will be learning about Climate and Weather in 5th and 6th Grade for Social Studies. Students will be building a terrarium as a part of their class project this week. Students may bring in a mason jar, small fishbowl from a dollar store (such as Dollar Tree) or some other bottle with a wide neck.
We will be learning about the ancient civilizations centered around the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and Mediterranean Sea, and the beginning of writing and laws. Students will dress up and talk about one of the ancient civilizations.
All students will complete in-class projects about harvest festivals around the world and complete their "Did you Know?" presentations.
In Language Arts, we will continue writing and learning about how to enhance our writing with lively and brilliant verbs instead of using forms of to be (is, was, were). We will also explore the use of compound subjects and predicates (connecting two subjects with conjunctions--and, but, or; or two verbs with conjunctions). Students did an amazing job on writing their Chanthaburi Durian Festival stories. I can't wait to see what else we come up with this week. Students who brought in food for their country last week before Thanksgiving will receive extra credit since we did not get to share cultures that Friday.
Homework (all grades): Students will complete Lesson 2 in their Vocabulary Textbooks. All work is due Friday. The words listed in lesson 2 are the words they will be tested on Friday. This is the book we will continue to use throughout the duration of the year. There will be no word work due on Friday; however, students must be prepared for the test on Friday.
Students will complete Lesson 2 in Handwriting textbooks and turn in all work on Friday.
Here are some of this week's memorable quotes from your students when writing on Thanksgiving and Black Friday:
"Black Friday is like a sad emoji." --Aubrey
"Black Friday is like the Hunger Games in the store."--Ivan
"Thanksgiving is like Christmas without the presents"--Aaron
"Trampling and running over people for stuff the day after being thankful for what you already have..." --Jordan
"Thanksgiving is the day to give the turkey credit for surviving this long and Black Friday is the day to work off all the weight you gained the day before."--Jared
Thanksgiving is a time for being thankful about what we have; Black Friday destroys that."--Derrick
"What did Nala say to Simba on Black Friday? You gotta 'Mu-fasa'!--Simone/Josiah
"Black Friday is overrated."--K'Ann
"Black Friday is shopping gone wrong."--Amauri
